Depends on if the helicopter will operate as ASW helo, gunship, or observation helo.
ASW helo usually put their radar on the chin, right under the cockpit, in order to support the maxim size and weight the radar will take up.
Gunship usually put the EO/Radar on the chin. The one on the rooftop is only for EO/TV, and most likely will have to reveal itself to the enemy---that means dies really soon in a real high intensity war. Mast sight usually is for EO/TV only , exception is AH-64D's MMW radar---all that due to how the gunship will be operating, hidden behind trees, hills and buildings to "peek" at the enemy and able to give target info to other none MMW mast sight AH-64d to hit those targets.
OH-58D's mast top EO/TV sight is for the same reason, allowing it to "peek" while not revealing itself to the enemy, while still allow it to guide AH-1W and AH-64A to those targets with laser sight.
Then there's AEW helo that has radar on the belly of helo.
Attack helo with radar on the chin while has RMS for EO/TV would mean one thing---good at nothing.... |
